Is the United States Federal Government Really Delaying Clinical Research?

Groups including the American and Oregon Medical Associations and American Cancer Society support marijuana research. Federal delay of research include Dr. Abram’s efforts to study Marijuana in AIDS Wasting: www.maps.org/mmj/index.html and Dr. Russo’s efforts in Acute Migraine Headache: www.maps.org/news-letters/v08n1/08115rus.html Under federal law, it is illegal for doctors to prescribe marijuana/cannabis as medicine even to dying and suffering patients to whom we routinely give drugs such as morphine.

Who Supports Access to Medical Cannabis?

See public opinion polls www.ohiopatient.net/projects/Poll_Analysis.htm single page list of organizations www.medicalcannabis.com/PDF/Grouplist.pdf supporting access to therapeutic cannabis and multi-page list of organizations including statements and types of endorsements www.norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=3388. The Oregon Medical Association is "neutral" on the Oregon Medical Marijuana Act www.omma1998.org/Doctors_keep_mum_on_marijuana.htm and in 1999 issued physician guidelines www.omma1998.org/OMA_guidelines.html. The California Medical Association recommends Cannabis be removed from Schedule I and rescheduled so doctors can prescribe marijuana as medicine just as doctors currently prescribe morphine.

A 2002 Federal Court of Appeals decision upheld First Amendment rights of physicians to recommend medical use of marijuana: http://oregon.gov/DHS/ph/ommp/legal.shtml
